Ireland — A Land of Stories
In Ireland, storytelling is an old and respected tradition. Long ago, people did not have books or TVs, so they sat around a warm fire and listened to a storyteller. In the Irish language, this person is called a seanchaí. A seanchaí could remember hundreds of stories and tell them in a clear, exciting voice.
Irish stories come in two big groups: myths and legends tell us about giants, saints, warriors and kings; folk tales bring us smaller, funnier characters like fairies, elves and leprechauns. A leprechaun is a tiny shoemaker who hides his gold in a secret location.
The heroes of these stories go on incredible adventures. They overcome great obstacles and fight magical beasts. Finn Mac Cumhal is one of the most famous champions: he led the Fianna, a brave group of warriors who protected the High Kings. Today, children in Ireland still learn and love these tales.
Author-adapted classroom text (about 150 words).
